Could the best offensive-minded college head coach join Sean McVay with the LA Rams?

The LA Rams are going full swing in training camp. Virtually all players, with the exception of NT A’Shawn Robinson, is on the field and mixing it up.  The 2020 NFL season appears to be a go, and football players and team staff are doing their best to keep it that way. That is not the case for the college football season.

The CFB season has almost been put on hold for this upcoming fall season for several major-football conferences. The Pac-12, Big-10, and other conferences are in limbo due to the current unfortunate coronavirus pandemic. The FCS has canceled their 2020 Fall season and a few conferences in Division 1 have postponed their season. There are even rumors and rumblings that a few of the college coaches may make the jump to the NFL in either an advisory or assistant coaching role.

College coaches in the NFL?

Imagine Alabama head coach Nick Saban joining forces with this buddy Bill Belichick. Or what if Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney became an advisor for a team like the Texans? At this time, both the SEC and ACC football conferences have approved the 2020 NCAA football season.  But the point remains that many college football coaches are now stuck until their conferences give the green light to play.

LA Rams head coach Sean McVay did just hire Kevin O’Connell and Brandon Staley as the new offensive and defensive coordinators respectively,  but would they hire a hotshot college coach or an established respected coach to come to help the team. Even beyond that, with no college football in 2020 for many schools, wouldn’t it make sense to add someone to the Rams scouting department who has intimate knowledge of college players for those conferences? So who would they choose?

The Rams already boast a trio of head coach/coordinators who make up one of the youngest coaching groups in the league. Meanwhile, they have been getting disrespected around the league with the majority of the media believing the team will take another step back this season.

In this season, the Rams can definitely become a surprise team that exceeds expectations. So, what if the team added a certain college football head coach who has been touted as an up and coming talent among the coaching ranks.

CFB Coach savant

This man has coached the past two consecutive Heisman trophy winners and also helped drastically improve another quarterback by raising his draft stock. Yes, I am talking about Oklahoma Sooners’ head coach Lincoln Riley. As of now, the Oklahoma Sooners are scheduled to play a revised 2020 NCAA football schedule. But that can change in an instant. If it does, the Rams need to be ready to make an offer.

Obviously, I know that this is beyond a Bikram Yoga stretch (RIP Kobe). But just for a moment, can you imagine both Lincoln Riley and Sean McVay joining forces for just one season? The magic they could conjure, along with Kevin O’ Connell, to unlock the full potential of quarterback Jared Goff. Their combined and focused efforts could vault him into the upper echelon of quarterbacks for good and without skepticism. Riley has already coached Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and, Jalen Hurts.

To infinity, and beyond!

Now the LA Rams have two dual-threat quarterbacks in John Wolford and Bryce Perkins on their roster. While it’s clear that the Rams did not add mobile quarterbacks by accident, exactly how qualified are the current coaches to scheme for that mobility?  Riley’s knowledge and intellect could create an amazing offense for the Rams in 2020, and beyond.

The Rams played so much better when they were in 12 personnel in 2019.  In the offseason, the team used three valuable draft picks to improve the talent and depth at the running back, tight end, and wide receiver positions. While we know that the team will experiment more but an offense can always get better. AGAIN, I know this is basically unrealistic but hey, we can dream can’t we?
