LA Rams News: As Taylor Rapp bikes, rookies Burgess and Fuller get snaps with starters at the safety position
The LA Rams defense will be a lot of fun. We know that the team’s defense is the brainchild of new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. We also know that Staley learned from NFL defense-guru Vic Fangio. Finally, we know that the mindset of Staley is to the defense much like the mindset of head coach Sean McVay is to the offense.
Mix it all up and what do you get? A defense with a heavy emphasis upon strong defensive linemen, linebackers who can support both the pass and the run, and plenty of nickel and dime sub-packages. Of course, more defensive back packages mean more defensive backs in coverage. So will it be safeties or cornerbacks? So far, the Rams appear to be picking up where the team left off last season. Three safeties.
Rapp’s knee is wrapped
Today’s training camp was not without incident. Second-year starting safety Taylor Rapp was on the exercise bike today and wearing an elastic legging on one leg. The cause? It appears that he tweaked his knee. Of course, the “tweaked his knee” can mean anything based on the Rams track record of reporting about Todd Gurley’s knee in the past (too soon?).
With Rapp on the exercise bike, that leaves the team to distribute those practice snaps to other players. Who are they?
Rookies reign
Today, that translated to rookies Jordan Fuller and Terrell Burgess. Curiously, Burgess who has been designated both as cornerback and safety, got work as a safety today. Fuller, also with a background at both positions, has been So how are the rookies doing?
The unconfirmed word out of training camp so far is that rookie Jordan Fuller has picked off a pass in each of the last three days. While that is news that should be taken with a grain of salt, it does highlight the fact that Fuller is an accomplished and undervalued rookie. Well, we’ve been on his bandwagon so far. His teammate Terrell Burgess is the secondary duct tape, capable of playing at virtually any defensive position behind the line of scrimmage.
The Rams still have a lot of action going on behind-the-curtain. But the news that is surfacing so far is promising on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Let’s hope that the team continues that momentum.
