Newly signed OLB Leonard Floyd ‘very confident that the Rams will have a top-10 defense’

Is it wrong to be confident about the team you play for? Well if it is wrong, LA Rams veteran outside linebacker Leonard Floyd most certainly doesn’t want to be right. While he has been a solid producer so far in his NFL career for the Chicago Bears, he has had to remain backstage and allow teammate Khalil Mack to shine in the spotlight.

That won’t happen now that he is here with the LA Rams.  It’s not that he is not fully aware that he is surrounded by incredible NFL defensive talent. But he has learned subtle ways of leading a defense. It’s not just about producing on the field. It’s about committing to a goal and then delivering.

Top-10 defense

Committing to a goal is exactly what he did today. In light of the Rams’ recent history over the past few seasons, he is making a pretty good stretch goal for the defense this year.  He pledged that he is ‘very confident’ that the Rams will have a top-10 defense.

We’re not shocked in the least. We feel the same way. After all, the Rams defense boasts one of the best defensive lines in the NFL, as well as one of the top secondaries. Even as this defense sorts out just how good they are on the edge, and who deserves to start at middle linebacker, the Rams will be a top -10 defense.

He’s seen it before

Floyd ought to know. He’s played for the Chicago Bears since 2016. In that time, they have had the 15th (2016), 10th (2017), third (2018), and eighth (2019) ranked defense. That is three out of four defenses in the NFL’s top-10.  Leonard Floyd played on all of them. Now? He plays for the LA Rams.

Will he be enough to kick the Rams from the 13th-ranked defense into the top 10? That is what he is here to find out.  Since the Rams 2019 restocked virtually the entire secondary midseason, there is a very strong probability that the defense does perform much better this year. This time, you needn’t take my word on it. Just ask Leonard Floyd.
