As NFL focuses upon roster cuts, will the LA Rams make a shock signing after training camp draws to a close?

Is the LA Rams roster set? Well, per the NFL, the Rams are 26 players too many by the league-wide 53 player maximum come this Saturday. Per head coach Sean McVay, the team is comfortable with the players they have. Per some fans? The Rams still need some help.  Perhaps the most important opinion, and one we likely won’t hear from anytime soon, is that of Rams general manager Les Snead.

As Rams GM, Snead is never complacent. He remains vigilant. He checks in with his head coach and with his positional coaches throughout training camp. In that way, he knows where the team is strong and where it is not.  He sees who is making plays, demonstrates upside, and who is fostering excitement in his coaches and teammates alike.

Snead tweaks linebacker roster

Snead has already used his influence to nudge the trajectory of the LA Rams linebacker group.  This group has been incredibly challenged with the was the off-season unfolded, and training camp did not relieve the pressure.  The Rams linebackers are the most inexperienced group. They have nobody who has a full year of starting NFL experience. Yet they are trying to ramp up to flourish in a very complicated defensive scheme of new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley’s design.

The team didn’t offer undrafted rookie Bryan London many opportunities in this training camp. That led to his dismissal, and the team adding ex-CFL linebacker Derrick Moncrief and re-signing formerly cut undrafted rookie Daniel Bituli.

Was that just a warm-up?

The history of Rams’ Les Snead is filled with out-of-nowhere trades, signings, and headlining personnel moves. As all 32 teams study their respective player rosters to determine where cuts could be made, I cannot shake the feeling that the LA Rams are cooking something up.  It could be something as simple as signing a couple of players cut by other teams at the deadline to round out their linebacker roster.  Or it could be something more?

The tension about the Rams roster is a bit.. electrified right now.  With the Rams already showing some concerns with the latest additions, that was before projected starter Travin Howard fell to a season-ending injury.  Does this mean that the LA Rams pursue a free agent linebacker?

How will the Rams resolve this one?

I expect that the Rams will kick tires on a couple. Whether or not that is incognito, or with full public disclosure is another matter entirely. The Rams “feel” like a team willing to make the right move to help out the defense at linebacker.  While I don’t think the team will go after a household name, keep an eye on any Broncos or Bears linebackers who are cut this weekend.

The Rams are seeking a young linebacker with a huge upside who the team can groom into the role. While he will likely be a taller lankier ILB to help with pass coverage, the Rams will not want to trade off the run defense.  This defense is about enlisting young players who can grow into the defense’s backbone over time.

Will that be a player currently on the roster? Or will Rams GM Snead work his roster magic one more time? We’ll know soon enough.  The team’s final roster forms up this weekend. Will the LA Rams tap that NFL Free Agency market one more time?
