NFL Rumors reporting the market for LA Rams TE Gerald Everett heating up

The LA Rams may be tempted back into the NFL trade market sooner rather than later. In the midst of roster cuts, NFL rumors report that the Rams are getting an increasing number of calls from teams who are very interested in trading with the Rams.  The player? Tight end Gerald Everett. Why would the Rams be willing to take those calls? Well, his contract expires in 2021.

The debate of how committed are the Rams to tight end Gerald Everett in the final year of his current contract has been raised before.  The trigger months ago was the LA Rams rumored interest in a tight end, Jordan Reed. Reed was not signed and eventually signed on with the rival San Francisco 49ers.  But the question was raised before. And now? NFL teams are following up to see what it would take to pry him away from the Rams.

Surplus into assets

The Rams know that they have multiple players seeking a new contract at the end of this season. While I have no first-hand knowledge, it seems that the team will focus upon CB Jalen Ramsey, WR Cooper Kupp, and perhaps S John Johnson III before Everett enters their queue.

Historically, Everett has seen action for approximately 33 percent of the Rams offensive snaps. With the team benefitting from a breakout season with Higbee in 2019, it is difficult to imagine that share increasing much this year.  But by virtually all comparisons, Everett is far more talented than any rookie tight end drafted this year.  And he is NFL experienced.

Operators are standing by

NFL teams seem to think so too. Phones are ringing, and it’s NFL teams asking about Rams TE Gerald Everett. He’s better than anyone drafted this year.

That means that he should be worth as much as a second-round pick to an NFL team eager for help at the tight end position.

Will the Rams pull the trigger? If they get the right compensation, it makes perfect sense. The team has Higbee locked up, rookie Brycen Hopkins to develop, Johnny Mundt to block, and the team and sign just cut TE Kendall Blanton to the practice squad.

No team is reportedly close to a deal at the moment. But as the Rams get tighter on the final roster, trading Everett could allow the team to get cap space, draft picks, and a coveted roster opening.
