The LA Rams lost one-year defensive coordinator Brandon Staley to the LA Chargers as their new head coach. While that was certainly disappointing, it was not completely unexpected. Of course, we did not expect him to leave after just one season, but we were as wrong as wrong can be.  Where did we go wrong? Well, we underestimated the number of NFL head coaching positions to be filled this offseason. By our estimations, the number of vacancies would be no greater than five.

The number of vacancies was seven. That was surprisingly high, as the 2020 NFL season was anything but ‘routine’. Yet that was seemingly ignored as NFL teams were ferocious in casting off head coaches who failed to succeed.

Of course, one such team to part ways with their head coach was the LA Chargers, who parted ways with head coach Anthony Lynn. They didn’t go far for his replacement as the team quickly focused upon LA Rams rookie defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. Not only did the Chargers get Staley, but they came back to help themselves to linebackers coach Joe Barry.

Complicating the matter further, the Detroit Lions have just hired LA Rams cornerbacks coach Aubrey Pleasant, who is very popular among the Rams defensive backs, instantly creates a strong lobby to persuade some of the best free agents to sign up with the Lions. Unfortunately, the LA Rams lead the list of teams with some of the top projected free agents of 2021.

Now armed with the familiarity of the Rams projected free agents and a need to transform their own defenses, the LA Chargers and Detroit Lions have become logical rivals to bid on the services of Rams players who will test this year’s NFL Free Agency market.

The logic to do so is sound. Even if the rosters of the Chargers and Lions are quite talented, both teams would benefit immensely by signing on players who have played for their new coaches before.
