The field

Hence, we see an increase across the board in the copycat-NFL league in quarterback read run schemes and run pass option plays (RPOs). And a new premium emerges on drafting such a player from the field with such qualities. (Although Minnesota Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton did the same thing for 18 seasons back in the ’60s and is enshrined in Canton.)

A most intriguing player with this quality is QB Jamie Newman — Wake Forest/Georgia, who is most often projected in the 4th round or later, largely because he opted out of the 2020 season. It’s exceedingly difficult to get a bead on any player who hasn’t seen the gridiron for more than a year, so there’s his elephant-in-the-room draft risk factor.

This speedy, elusive 6-foot-4, 230-pounder can run, however, and powerfully so. He reminds many observers of Cam Newton because he’s not afraid to put his head down and punish defenders.

All we have to go on is his 2019 stats when he played for Wake Forest -2,868 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 574 rushing yards and 6 rushing touchdowns.

He has the overall athleticism to make an NFL scout salivate, but his accuracy is often cited as a concern. (Truly, Cam Newton 2.0). But he will be at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama this Saturday and you can bet many scouts eyeglasses will be trained on this prospect.
