3 underrated FA ILBs the LA Rams should chase down
By Jay Blucher
NY Giant Devante Downs
In spot duty, rotational play last season, the 6-foot-two, 252-pounder made 33 tackles last season, a career-high mark for him, 25 of which were solos.
Downs started in eight of his 16 appearances with the Giants last season and had one pass breakup and one fumble recovery to go along with those tackles. At 25 years old, he’s now in his third year in the league.
As a seventh-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in the 2018 NFL draft, Downs joined the Giants in 2019. if the name or face seems familiar, it should be. He was one of the New York Giants players who showed up a SoFi Stadium in week four and put on a good showing for himself. He was all over the field, and whenever the Rams running backs Malcolm Brown or Darrell Henderson thought that they had daylights, Downs brought them…wait for it… down.
Downs is also a capable special teamer, as he filled in primarily as a special teams contributor throughout the final seven weeks of the Giants’ season last year. That should not be overlooked. The Rams coverage units need swift infusions of talent
He’d also be priced at an affordable rate for the Rams as he last signed a two-year contract with the Giants for $1.32 million. That translates into pittance on a one-year deal. And he can play as a starter.
