The Rams quarterback room
So why should the Rams waste the precious few dollars on a backup quarterback who may never take the field, when other positions like offensive center, defensive back, outside linebacker, linebacker, and even offensive tackle, would benefit from the addition of a competent veteran?
Well, in all of the other roles, the Rams conceivably draft just as effectively to achieve a solution for 2021, and for the foreseeable future. Only the quarterback position, which the complexities and challenges of running the offense, is the hand of a veteran so much more valuable than a rookie.
So far, the LA Rams quarterback assembly includes starter Matthew Stafford (pocket passer), backup John Wolford (dual-threat), Bryce Perkins (dual-threat), and recently added Devlin Hodges (dual-threat). The Rams run the offense through a pocket passer and yet have almost deliberately gone to back the quarterback role up with mobile quarterbacks.
Still, the Ram will only have a limited number of spots on the roster, and signing a quarterback with experience would almost certainly require the Rams to carry three quarterbacks on the active roster. That’s something that they are not so prone to do. But the 2020 experience may force the team to reconsider that strategy for the 2021 season.
Who is still available? Well, the cream of the NFL quarterback crop of free agents has been skimmed over several times. But there may still be one or two left with some value. Let’s examine a few of the potential fits.
