Tight end turmoil

When the season ended, the LA Rams not only lost veteran free agent tight end Gerald Everett to the rival Seattle Seahawks, but he joined former Rams Passing Game Coordinator Shane Waldron. Prior to that, he served both as the tight end coach and quarterback Waldron hired on as the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator, and will no doubt welcome the addition of Everett as he works to reformulate the Seahawks offense to a more quarterback-friendly version.

Meanwhile, back at the LA Rams ranch, tight end coach, West Phillips will have the honor of reforging a tight end group. And if you haven’t made the name connection, Wes Phillips is a third-generation football coach. He is the grandson of the late Bum Phillips, and son of former LA Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.  While he has a solid football background, he will be put to the test this year.

You see, he must get the current tight ends ready and equipped to become favored targets of new quarterback Matthew Stafford.  We’ve talked at length about how Stafford loves to throw to the biggest targets, and the Rams have two rather large targets in 6-foot-6 tight end Tyler Higbee and 6-foot-4 tight end Brycen Hopkins. Is this finally the year that the LA Rams boast a tight end with over 1000 yards receiving.

Of course, the LA Rams are always looking to add new talent, and the tight end position could be boosted during or after the 2021 NFL Draft.  The Rams have created some rather sophisticated offensive formations and new plays to harness the versatility of both blocking and receiving abilities of their tight ends.
