NFL Draft 2021: Prediction – LA Rams shake up draft at 57
By Bret Stuter
Scenario II: Draft for need
If no trade package cuts the mustard, the LA Rams could always turn to the most obvious reason for the NFL Draft: Filling roster needs. In the 2021 NFL Draft, the LA Rams certainly have a laundry list of those. The Rams have the need for a cornerback, offensive center, and linebackers. Of course, the team would benefit from any offensive lineman, defensive back, defensive lineman, pass rusher, and even skilled players.
So how will the team sort through the needs to arrive at the best possible choice for the roster?
Part of that decision will hinge upon how readily available players are predicted to be on the board at later picks. As the LA Rams approach the podium at 57, the draft board may boast talented prospects at cornerback, offensive center, and linebacker. So who to choose? Well, as in any draft, the strategy is to anticipate whether those positions may be available later in the draft?
Of course, even the most clever of strategies is subject to getting it wrong occasionally. NFL teams exhibit a bit of herd mentality, as one team choosing a particular position in the NFL Draft will influence other NFL teams to grab one too. Many positions in this draft are rather deep.
But the offensive center position is too specific, the talent and experience are simply too unique. If the LA Rams do not trade back, their fate is clearly decided. The LA Rams will draft the best available offensive center with their 57th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Unless…
What happens if some arbitrary first-round talent of interest falls to 57 as the Rams step up to make their selection?
