No ‘Bones’ about it

Fassel is known to be a loyal coach. He wants to bring back his guys in Big D, the players he already knows can perform and are simpatico with each other and himself. Smart move.

So when the LA Rams signed free agent punter Corey Bojorquez this week it was a move that could be signaling more than just competition at the punter position. By all rights, this move has cleared the decks for the team to move on from Hekker.

It’s painfully obvious. Bojorquez is not just another camp body. He was the best punter in the league last year.

After all, Hekker’s not only the highest-paid punter in the league at $4.9 million (!) but his production last year was down – the worst performance of his nine-year NFL career.  Hekker ranked 17th in NFL in 2020. Hey, nobody is arguing that Johnny Hekker has not been a standout for the team over the years.  He has. But if the Rams are to get serious about getting better, then they have to commit to doing so. Hekker is high-priced but wasn’t high production.

He’s a champagne-priced punter on a Rams team that needs to operate on a beer budget. And wouldn’t it just be so very Cowboy-ish for America’s Team to not just sign any ole’ punter, but to grab a recognizable name who comes with a built-in cachet of Pro Bowl appearances already?
