Offensive guard

The fifth and final prospect we will be looking at is an offensive guard from Brigham Young University by the name of Chandon Herring (5.69-grade NFL.com). Herring may not be rated highly, but when offensive linemen are concerned, some of the NFL’s best have been a product of falling out of the draft and yet developing into a solid protector of NFL quarterbacks.

Similarly, BYU’s quarterback Wilson had plenty of protection in the pocket to make those throws,  thanks to the play of his offensive guard, Chandon Herring.

The 6-foot-7 315-pounder spent the majority of his collegiate snaps over four seasons at right guard, but also played some right tackle and left guard as well. Versatility is a huge plus to the LA Rams.

NFL scouts and observers say Herring projects as a developmental backup at offensive tackle but could start immediately at guard.  The ability to play all four positions on an offensive line brings real value to any NFL team. So we can credit him with positional versatility bonus points for the Rams as well.

Herring also made Fox News sports reporter Dave Feldman’s “Freak List,” where he was dubbed “the complete specimen.” Freak List

Not that you necessarily need your o-linemen to be particularly speedy, but it speaks to Herring’s tremendous overall athleticism that he runs a 4.9-second 40-yard dash, which is extremely fast for a lineman.
