IV – Either OL Coach Carberry has a plan, or he is still processing

The offensive line has been a major focus of the past two drafts, and yet it has not been much of a priority to the Rams organization. Of course, all of that was handled adeptly in the past by veteran offensive line coach Aaron Kromer. There is a new offensive line coach on the staff this year named Kevin Carberry, and he is already under pressure to address the offensive line.

But does he even have enough data to form that plan? After all, his experience with the Rams to this point has been talking to coaches, players, and watching footage from past games and practices. He is only now building relationships with the veteran offensive linemen of the team. Is it simply too soon to expect a fully functional off-season plan to address areas of concern on the line before he ever meets with any of the players?

That’s a tall ask, and he likely is relying upon the guidance of other coaches in making his recommendations. Perhaps it was too soon to ask for draft recommendations to address concerns on the offensive line. Too soon and too premature?  No doubt, he’s heard the same assessment we have heard. The Rams are not in a position where the team needs to do anything on the offensive line. For 2021, the Rams coaches and front office is willing to let it ride as is, at least for now.

Perhaps after Coach Carberry works with the offensive line, sees where they are individually and as a group, he will have a better basis for planning how to improve anticipated depth or production issues.  We know that the Rams brought him in on the analysis of offensive center Quinn Meinerz. Clearly, the Rams opted not to draft Meinerz, despite having the opportunity to do so on multiple occasions. Whatever the plan is for the offensive, one thing is certain. We’re not to the finished product just yet.
