Catching Fades with Aqib Talib
The story sprang from a video podcast of former LA Rams cornerback Aqib Talib, who is covering the latest NFL stories for The Volume. Even as we now debate and harangue the Rams sudden pivots from love-’em-to-hate-’em over offensive skill players, keep in mind that the pattern began much earlier when the Rams loaded their secondary with star cornerback Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib.
And so, the two veteran defensive backs, added to the Rams roster with much hoopla and fanfare, were discarded with neither. The Rams acquired Talib from the Denver Broncos in 2018. The team hoped to pair Talib up with the controversial Peters who they acquired from the Kansas City Chiefs in that same year. The pair were welcomed to the Rams in true Los Angeles celebrity style. A year later? They were both shown the door.
So it is likely no small coincidence that it was Talib who interviewed Peters about their time together on the LA Rams roster. And it was certainly no accident that Talib, intimately familiar with Peters’ volatile nature and ability to suddenly burst into rage, was the person to pose the question to Peters about the best defensive back in the NFL, and then tossed out Jalen Ramsey to Peters at the 15:00 minute mark.
By the time they had related the narrative over their shared experiences, Peters confides in Talib that he was: ‘Pissed off moreso because I…” with the Rams at the 37:45 mark, prompting Talib to ask “So you were pissed off?”. That prompted Peters to reply
"“Ah yeah. F*** them. That’s how I was feeling and I’m still feeling like that because I felt disrespected in the sense of (pause) Yeah, ya’ll can trade me, that’s a part of the business. But two minutes after that you bring in another guy who do the same sh** I do. Maybe a little bit different? But if we play this compare game, I do a little bit more because I’m making a little bit more plays. Now you may be doing what you’re doing, but… And we love what you’re doing because that shit is a little bit exciting and your as competitive as a (expletive deletive).” –Marcus Peters via Aqip Talib interview on Catchin’ Fades podcast"
Okay. I get it. He feels a bit blindsided. But it’s been nearly two years now. Time to move on.
Does Marcus Peters have any real friends? No, not just folks he hangs out with to help him spend his millions. This is something where a true friend needs to step up and just talk him down from the ledge. What’s past is past. His NFL future is of his own making now.
If there was a need to incentivize the Rams in facing the Baltimore Ravens after the 2019 45-6 shellacking in Los Angeles, this certainly is bulletin board material. And the last game where the Ravens and Rams faced off, Peters was a constant verbal barrage aimed at Jalen Ramsey, a player who truly had nothing to do with the Rams decision except for the fact that the Rams wanted to get Ramsey.
In the end, Peters is a Ravens player now, not an ex-Rams player. It’s time he acts like it.
