A star is born?

2021 is the final year for Sebastian Joseph Day on his rookie contract. And he spent his rookie season in red-shirt mode, waiting in the shadow of veteran Ndamukong Suh. But it wasn’t wasted time. Bash wanted on the field, and he saw the way to do that was to become as competent as his veteran mentor, so he spent his rookie season posing questions to Suh, and Suh took the rookie under his wing and explained the game from his perspective.

"“I don’t think you understand how much that hurt (stuck on the bench his entire rookie season). But honestly, though, everything happens for a reason. Obviously we had great players here — at the end of the day, it’s Suh, you know what I mean? So all I had to do was really just take that time, and study that film, and ask Suh questions.I was able to, after every series, come and watch the Surface with Suh, and really break down what he saw, go over the plays. Really just tap into his mind,” Joseph-Day said. “And shoutout to him for being such a good guy, and being that guy for me — taking me under his wing and teach me a lot of the stuff he saw through his eyes.” – per Sebastian Joseph Day as reported by therams.com Myles Simmons"

In his second season, SJD became the Rams starting nose tackle. While he did not play at a Pro Bowl level, he played well enough for the coaching staff to return him to the starting roster in 2020. And after committing to shocking a lot of people, he went out and had a solid season. For the 2020 season, he arrived stronger, steadier, and much more determined to hold his own. In the final year of his contract, Bash is positioned to have a career-high season.

He has not gone unnoticed, though. He was named to the NFL’s Underappreciated List for 2021. At a huge 6-foot-4 and 310-pounds, he is strong and powerful enough to hold his own against double teams up the middle, but long and agile enough to slip through and apply the pressure on the quarterback and end the play behind the line of scrimmage.

While we have featured a number of important camp showdowns and will continue to do so, Sebastian Joseph Day’s 2021 season will be hugely important to the Rams’ effort to remain among the NFL’s best defenses. While the team will be scrambling to find money to retain key players, SJD will be scrambling this year to ensure that his name appears on the LA Rams’ shortlist of veterans to re-sign in 2022. And you can bet that two coaches in Stroudsburg, PA will be cheering for Bash to do exactly that.
