Saving the best for last

Suddenly, the guy whose career seemed to have no end appears to be ending this season. He has made the NFL talk show circuit like a player on his farewell tour. His last hurrah. The last curtain call. The man who has devoted 15 years of his life to professional football is giving one more year in the hopes to get a Super Bowl ring. All of his chips are on the table. But he won’t be doing it alone.

One of the oldest NFL veterans plays on the youngest team in the NFL. He’s like the NFL professor at the University of the LA Rams. His ‘classes’ are among the most popular in the NFL. He commands respect because he holds so much knowledge. Forget talent (he has that too). In the NFL, as in life, knowledge is power. And he shares that knowledge openly for the good of the team.  Even the housekeeping issues, like knowing not to bother head coach Sean McVay between Tuesday and Friday evening before game day.  Call it the Berlitz survivor’s guide to the LA Rams.

He is the guy who is the first player tapped by rookies who want to learn how to be the best offensive linemen in the NFL.

And he is always willing to field just one more question. That one more question leads to another. And then another. It’s just who Whitworth is. Always present in the moment. Always giving back. He is a coach, wise friend, and talented offensive lineman all rolled into one.

You can’t just draft a guy like that. Hell, you can’t expect to sign a free agent like that. Teams typically do not let players like that escape.  Well, one team did, and thank you Cincinnati Bengals.

After this season, the LA Rams will likely share one more chapter with the Bengals: Life after Andrew Whitworth. That chapter was written very much like a horror novel in Cincinnati. Let’s hope the LA Rams can write a happier ending in their version.
