Off the edge
Is there anyone out there who still holds out hope for a significant contribution from second-year outside linebacker Terrell Lewis besides us? Well, even we have begun to weaken in our support because no matter how well he plays on the football field, he has to be on the football field. So far, the question of Terrell Lewis’ availability remains unanswered.
But he is available for this one. And perhaps it is now when all the chips are down and the outlook for his future with the LA Rams as a pass rusher is at its darkest point, that he rises from the ashes and has a dominating game. After all, outside linebacker Justin Lawler had an uncharacteristically productive preseason opener against the LA Chargers. Rookie Chris Garrett showed up the following week against the LV Raiders and dominated in that one.
Now, Terrell Lewis needs to put up some type of response on the football field to the ever-multiplying number of questions about whether he can remain healthy enough to even be a factor for the Rams this year. And this could be the type of game to put some of those questions to rest.
The funny thing about exceeding expectations is that it starts with what those expectations are, to begin with. For the 2021 NFL season, there are practically no expectations for Terrell Lewis. And with that, the stage is set for Lewis to have an opportunity to impress some folks. He is a big, powerful, and long-limbed defender who can combine power, agility, and quickness to get the advantage at the edge. Now that everyone expects him to pull up limping just by walking onto the field, he can surprise everyone by playing the edge as he has in the past.
Three veterans. Three defenders. Three opportunities for the LA Rams defense to prove that this year’s defense is up to the challenge of following the 2020 Rams defense.
