Here we go, the NFC Championship Game, and the right to represent the National Football Conference in Super Bowl LVI. Both teams have been here before in the past five years. Both teams have won an NFC Championship Game, but have gone on to lose in their respective Super Bowl Contests.

If at first, you don’t succeed? Try. Try again.

This one is for all the marbles for both teams. Forget the home-field advantage. Forget the records. Forget all that you think you know about the LA Rams and the San Francisco 49ers. This is a brand new football game and it’s about football legacy.

For the San Francisco 49ers, this game can validate the fact that their head coach Kyle Shanahan has done no better than 39-42 for the 49ers since taking over for the team. He got the team to 13-3 one season, but if you look at the other four years, they’ve been a dismal 26-39. In fact, if not for the sudden turn of fortunes this season, there was a growing voice that the 49ers may have sought a change at their head coaching position. Now, they are two games from winning it all.

Time for these Rams to molt

For the LA Rams, this game can be a catharsis of frustration, disappointment, and humiliation suffered at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers these past three seasons. But it’s more than just that. This is about this team winning despite injuries, winning despite COVID-19 spikes among the player, winning against determined opponents, and winning a chance to prove that so many great players on this roster are just that – great.

The entire roster, with the exception of RB Sony Michel and OLB Von Miller, has the feel of a team that was rescued straight off the Island of Misfit Toys. Before this season, many players, and perhaps even head coach Sean McVay himself, were described with the phrase ‘not quite enough’.  Now, just two victories away from being ‘quite enough,’ they all have a chance to purge that narrative.

It comes down to playing and winning this game. Then, going out and doing so once more in two weeks’ time.

The team has not had much success over the 49ers over the past three years, but this could be different. The last time the team entered the last game of the season with 12 wins, they defeated the San Francisco 49ers to win their 13th game.

It’s okay to have butterflies on this one. The line opened in this one with the team as a 3.5-point home favorite. The line has remained at 3.5-points all week. Does smart money think the Rams can win this one? Well, the experts I’ve surveyed are mixed in their predictions.

The defense expects to welcome back rookie ILB Ernest Jones for this one. That will not only help the play on the football field but will give them an emotional boost as well.  The offense will get an emotional boost as well, as they expect offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth to play in this one. That is great timing, as his replacement, Joe Noteboom, has been fighting a Pectoral injury suffered at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week.

Recommended Bets:

The 49ers have mastered the art of beating the LA Rams in the regular season. But this is no longer the regular season. And so, this week’s narrative is no longer about how many 49ers fans will invade SoFi Stadium, whether 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo has sold his soul to the devil to never lose to the Rams, or whether Niners head coach is the Sensai of the NFL Dojo, and he has taught everything he knows to Sean McVay.

This one is about persevering. This one is about the players on the football field. Ultimately, each player on each play must dig down deep to find the way, any way, to impose his will upon his opponent.  Twice so far this year, the 49ers faced oblivion and found that way to win. Now? The Rams face the same black hole, the same nothingness. I believe that Aaron Donald, Von Miller, Matthew Stafford, and Cooper Kupp won’t let that happen.

Rams on to Super Bowl LVI?

The LA Rams face two games. If they are victorious, the team will face the winner of the Cincinnati Bengals vs. the Kansas City Chiefs from the AFC Championship Game in two weeks. The San Francisco 49ers are a tough NFL team and they certainly have done very well this season. But as soon as their season ends, they have a number of tough decisions to make regarding which direction they will go with their quarterback going forward.

So it’s only the right thing to do to give them the loss here, and let them get to work on that dilemma as quickly as possible.
