LA Rams free agency: 4 Eagles who could be trade targets for 2022
By Bret Stuter
Another gem for the defensive line?
If the Eagles are truly considering trading DT Fletcher Cox, the LA Rams should certainly be interested. Despite the fact that Cox is a 10-year veteran of the NFL, he still has plenty of production left in him. Unfortunately, that defensive prowess has been in decline, which is likely why the Eagles would entertain a trade.
The Eagles anticipated the need to consider freeing up the roster spot that Cox holds in the way that they restructured his contract for the future. In all honesty, the Eagles are set up to cut Cox with several clauses, as Over the Cap explains in detail in a video at the bottom of the page.
So what would the Rams get in trading for Cox? Historically, whenever the Rams add a player, that player reverts back to a more productive version of themselves. For the 6-foot-4, 310-pound Cox, That would place him in a devastatingly effective tier of pass rushers on the defensive line. Also, the Rams’ current defensive line rotation is such that Cox would be given plenty of looks on the football field as well as the chance to take a breather.
Swap Robinson for Cox?
In order to make this deal work, the Rams would likely seek a way to alleviate some of their own salary cap expense and could do so by swapping A’Shawn Robinson for Cox, plus a conditional 2023 draft pick based upon how often Cox plays for the Rams. If Cox is rejuvenated on this Rams defense like so many others have been, that should prove to be no problem.
Proposed asking price: 2022 sixth-round pick
Rams should offer: A’Shawn Robinson plus conditional 2023 seventh-round pick
In the end, the Philadelphia Eagles appear to have a number of players on their trade block. With the LA Rams roster at risk of losing key contributors in the 2022 NFL Free Agency market, the front office would be wise to consider a number of options to restock the roster. The 2022 NFL Draft will be a bit light on immediate impact prospects, as the Rams picks are almost entirely on Day 3.
Funds are a bit tight as well, so wholesale signings in free agency are unlikely to take place. The Rams are left with the trade route and have made good use of that to improve their roster in 2021. In the end, these are simply some trade scenarios with just one NFL team. We’ll have plenty more potential targets to discuss in the weeks ahead.
