Cryptic Tweet by LA Rams Sebastian Joseph Day means extension?
By Bret Stuter
The LA Rams love to get value in the NFL Free Agency market. Of course, all teams seek bargains when signing players back to restock the rosters of NFL Teams. But sometimes, bidding for the services of singular players carries the sticker price far beyond what that player will deliver to the team.
That is overpaying and can cripple a team for several years. The Rams dabbled in that strategy after their appearance in Super Bowl LIII with contract extensions for QB Jared Goff, WR Brandin Cooks, and RB Todd Gurley. That chapter didn’t end well.
But one of the strategies that the Rams do employ is re-signing their own veterans to extensions after injuries. Whether for just one season or a multi-year deal, it secures a key starter for the roster and affords a key contributor the security to re-schedule the timing of test their own fair market value by delaying the appearance in the NFL Free Agency market
Rams Free Agency and Sebastian Joseph Day
One of the injured players who finds himself hitting the NFL Free Agency market is nose tackle Sebastian Joseph Day. While there are other positions for the LA Rams to spend their dollars, are there any better values? That is the question that the front office must answer as the team tries to maximize their roster with contract extensions as the Rams Free agency strategy takes shape.
Today, Sebastian Joseph Day tweeted a rather cryptic message, and that was all it took to send his LA Rams fans followers into a viral reaction. Let’s break it down. He sent this:
after the news had broken about the Denver Broncos trading for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. Of course, the SJD tweet may simply be his way of expressing WOW at the amount of compensation the Broncos were willing to give up for Wilson.
But the proximity of the Rams Free Agency efforts is not that far away. NFL teams can open discussions with NFL players and agents in six days, and the contracts can be formally executed in eight days. One such player that the LA Rams are interested in bringing back to the roster is Sebastian Joseph Day. So many fans have already begun to interpret his cryptic tweet along the meaning of his potential to re-sign with the LA Rams.
We hope that is the case, as we believe that SJD offers significant value to the team. While that could be the meaning behind the tweet, the timing was more likely a reaction to the trade involving an NFC West rival.
Of course, you can choose how you interpret the meaning of SJD’s tweet. After all, the LA Rams are not very transparent over the offseason. Will the Rams invest in extending Sebastian Joseph Day? We’ll know soon.
