Since the heavy lifting will be done later in this draft, let’s start with the players who are most available for the LA Rams. In this case, 6-foot-3 342-pound nose tackle Marquan McCall is someone who is in the right position at the right time. With the loss of veteran NT Sebastian Joseph Day to the LA Chargers in free agency, the defense will be looking to reinforce the ranks at the defensive line. And McCall is the fireplug type nose tackle that is a throwback to old-school football.

He is an ideal player for DL Coach Eric Henderson and the entire #DAWGWORK mindset. Why? He is already a selfless player, a huge powerful young man who gobbles blockers, stuffs runs, and penetrates up the middle of the line of scrimmage. While he has done all of that from sheer size and power, just wait until he gains the refinement of one of the best DL coaches in the business.

Raw? You bet. You don’t get a refined technique in players who fall out of the draft. But, will he? He reportedly dropped 40 pounds, which in his Senior Bowl performance really raised some eyebrows.

McCall does not offer much in the way of pass rush, yet. But that is less about his ability than his role at Kentucky. He was tasked with defending the run, and he was a solid defender. He will likely end up red-shirted if the Rams do select him, but even as a rookie, he offers a host of valid reasons to draft him.

The LA Rams will need defensive linemen, as they are projected to face four defensive linemen on expiring contracts. McCall is someone the Rams can add now, then dust off in a year in a leaner and more agile version ready and ripped to play some serious NFL football. He has flashed plenty of solid play and could be a significant player for the Rams in the future.
