Punter

The 2022 NFL Draft is loaded with punters. Did you read that correctly? Yes, yes you did. As we began to analyze this draft class, we were astounded to discover that there are more than five punter prospects.

In fact, we created the LA Rams Big Board specifically for punters in the 2022 NFL Draft. But before we had our list of five punters completed, we uncovered a sixth talented punter who could win a starting spot on the LA Rams roster.  Then, as we accumulated pre-draft meetings, we discovered that the LA Rams had met with University of Nevada punter Julian Diaz.

So many Rams fans have their hearts set on Matt Araiza, a prospect who had met with the LA Rams. But because almost all 32 NFL teams are fully aware of Araiza and his nickname of “Punt God,” the LA Rams who came to this draft relatively unarmed will have a tough time claiming Araiza if another team selects him in Round 4 through 6.

While some insist that this draft is Matt Araiza or bust, I am satisfied that the Rams front office has done plenty of due diligence on the punters who are available in this draft. The Rams, much like their kicker role, want power plus accuracy. It is simply not effective for a punter to boom a 70-yard punt only to result in a touchback.  I’m far happier with a punter who can coffin kick that sucker within the opponent’s five-yard line.
