Pick 253

The LA Rams may have been overly concerned with their secondary depth based on how many pics they used to reinforce their defensive backs, but Kansas State safety Russ Yeast would be a solid pickup no matter how many defensive backs the Rams had before entering this year’s draft.

Yeast is a legacy prospect, as his father is a former Cincinnati Bengals’  wide receiver by the name of Craig Yeast. With NFL football in his genetics, Russ Yeast will perform better than many draft profiles expect. How so? Well, with the NFL in his background, his familiarity with the pros will occur with far less ‘learning curve’. In fact, the NFL social circle is such that he may already be familiar with some of the staff, coaches, and players associated with the LA Rams already.

Yeast is a raw but potent prospect. That is, he flashes the type of traits that makes him so much more than a stat sheet. As Ramblin Fan’s resident draft guru John Vogel described immediately following the pick, Russ Yeast is a big-thumper who is still learning how to play the role with the most effectiveness.

At 5-foot-10 and 192-pounds, he will likely be encouraged to hit the weight round and armor up with about 10-15 pounds of additional muscle mass. But make no mistakes, his background in both cornerback and safety roles in college has the effect of positioning him as an ideal hybrid defensive back that defensive coordinators droll over.
