Can LA Rams new QB Baker Mayfield lead team rest of the way?
By Bret Stuter
Rams GM Les Snead is still the White Wizard
Well, that’s one of the reasons why LA Rams GM Les Snead placed a claim for the underappreciated young man. But there was more to it. Mayfield is no rookie, and he does not give the Rams four years on a rookie contract to learn the Rams system. But these are the LA Rams, and the Rams are not playing checkers right now, but chess.
The LA Rams pioneered the picks-for-players that swept the NFL in the 2022 off-season. Now, the Rams are taking full advantage of the NFL Waiver Wire. Why? As is the case with the Rams acquisitions, this team loves to audition talented players in the final year of their contract, and then reap the reward of an awarded compensator draft pick.
Making buzz out of nothing at all
So the key to that strategy is to create buzz around Baker Mayfield with just five NFL games remaining on the Rams’ schedule.
The Rams not only needed QB Baker Mayfield to help bridge the glaring need in their roster for the remainder of the 2022 NFL season, but the team needed him to perform well. As the young man led the Rams to their first touchdown on their Thursday Night Football game with Mayfield under center, the Rams reached that objective. But when he won that game with less than two minutes with another touchdown drive, the Rams created a Social Media viral buzz.
Clearly, the Rams had the right guy for the job.
