Tell me if you’ve heard this one before. The LA Rams claimed former Cleveland Browns/Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield off the NFL Waiver Wire, gave him the equivalent of a 24-hour crash course in their offensive playbook, and then sent him onto the football field in front of a nationally televised (streaming) NFL audience to run the team for all but the first offensive series.

The result? The Mayfield Miracle. A touchdown comeback in the fourth quarter that rivals any and all LA Rams comeback victories in the history of the franchise. And it was all due to a guy who had just gotten off the plane hours earlier.

Of course, he had plenty of help. The oft-ridiculed and berated Rams defense held the potent Las Vegas Raiders offense to just 16 points, and of those scores, just three points in the second half. The Rams got a rushing touchdown from RB Cam Akers on a first down and goal plunge from the Raiders’ one-yard line.

The Rams also got key receptions from nine different players, including a game-winning touchdown reception by WR Van Jefferson, the first-ever game-winning catch of his life.

The Coach McVay Show

That all led to the smile on Coach McVay’s face in the latest episode of the Coach McVay Show, where he sat down to talk about the Rams’ latest win with hosts Stu Jackson and D’Marco Farr.  This is an episode that you won’t want to miss.

One of the intriguing responses by Coach McVay came after a question was posed about whether the team’s experiences this season will make the team rethink their strategy of not investing in the backup quarterback position with players who can come in as relief and be expected to win. Until this point, the Rams have been satisfied with carrying two undrafted backup quarterbacks on the roster, who have been instrumental in preparing the team during training camp, running the offense in preseason games, and running the scouting team in weekly practices.

While not wishing to give away any secrets, McVay certainly had a “we are looking into that,” type of response that suggests the team could be looking to invest value into a backup quarterback role this offseason. That could come in the form of extending Baker Mayfield, signing a free agent, or perhaps even drafting a talented rookie quarterback in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Expecting this turn of events, we have a few quarterbacks listed among our LA Rams Top 50 prospects draft Big Board. Unlike other Big Boards, we employed the help of NFL Mocks.com site expert Hunter Haas, who customized a Top 50 draft prospects big board that would feature players who fit the LA Rams’ needs and culture, and who are expected to be on the board as the Rams make their selections.

What this all means is a new twist to the LA Rams’ off-season plans. Stay tuned, because this sounds like a lot of fun.
