3 cheap options Rams could use to fill Myles Garrett's vacated roster spot

The Los Angeles Rams have officially placed edge rusher Myles Garrett on injured reserve following his arthroscopic knee surgery. That move triggers two things: Garrett will remain on IR for at least the next four weeks. Meanwhile, it also frees up a slot on the Rams roster.

The team has elevated safety Tanner Ingle from the practice squad ahead of Monday's game, but how should they fill Garrett's vacancy in coming weeks?

Some positions are low-priority. The Rams already boast seven wide receivers, five tight ends, three running backs, and three QBs. Offensive skill players already swell the ranks. The team even carries nine offensive linemen, which should be plenty over the next month.

The defense clearly needs help. Starting linebackers Nate Landman and Omar Speights were banged up. Similarly, both nose tackles, Poona Ford and Ty Hamilton, were ineffective. Even safety Kam Kinchens was lethargic in Week 1. The Rams have ruled him out for Week 2 with a hamstring injury.

Without knowing how much time Garrett will miss, general manager Les Snead should limit his options to players familiar with the organization. Here are three who fans already know quite well.

Edge Morgan Fox (free agency)

Former Rams defensive end Morgan Fox is no All-Pro, but he is a stubborn and sturdy defender who spent four seasons in LA. Since then he has bounced between three teams in five years.

Fox played his best football when he suited up for either the Rams or the Chargers. He is inexpensive, familiar with LA's defense, and brings nine seasons of NFL experience. The Rams needn't land a superstar. Snead can set his sights on a rotational contributor, and Fox can be that.

Defensive lineman Larrell Murchison (Rams practice squad)

Promoting Murchison from the team's practice squad won't draw fans to the edge of their seats, but it would be a smart move for two reasons. Murchison offers just enough in the pass rush while having the versatility to slide all across the defensive front.

Better still, he's been in Los Angeles since 2022, giving him plenty of experience within the organization.

Safety Jordan Fuller (free agency)

Fuller was a key contributor to the Horns' 2021 Super Bowl season. Since leaving two years later, he has spent a season apiece with the Falcons and Panthers. Fuller knows current players and coaches and has solid coverage skills, plus a knack for stepping up in key moments.

Fuller may not be starting material any longer, but he deserves another shot. LA's secondary still needs to improve its chemistry and communication, and Fuller can contribute. He's a solid example of a player who would serve the Rams' needs for both affordability and fit.
