(2) - Odell Beckham Jr. knows the offense and how to win in postseason
No, this is not some form of "Ooh, another free agent! Let's sign him," type of article. The Rams have proven to be less effective at signing veteran free agents this season. If you don't believe me, just ask veteran cornerback Tre'Davious White, a free agent defensive who didn't work out and was traded away at the NFL Trade Deadline.
The Rams roster, and particularly the offense, is not a perfect fit for just anyone. The team was so encouraged by the positive results from OBJ that the team took a chance by signing WR Allen Robinson in 2022. That didn't work out, either.
So, it's not a matter of signing someone. It's clear that it comes down to signing the right one. And the history of OBJ's fit in the Rams offense is a historical fact. Odell Beckham Jr. scored five touchdowns in the Rams offense in just eight games. He was even more effective in the postseason. But why OBJ, and why now?
(1) - NFL discipline still hangs over the head of WR Demarcus Robinson
Lest we all forget, the NFL still has the matter of discipline over LA Rams WR Demarcus Robinson, following his arrest under suspicion of DUI and driving at an alleged speed of over 100 miles per hour. While the LA Rams have discussed the matter with Robinson, and due to his heartfelt remorse, and taken no action to suspend him from the team, But the NFL office has yet to conclude its investigation and hand down its ruling
And with the Rams improving with each passing game into a bonafide NFL Playoff contender, and disciplinary action taken by the league could derail the Rams bid to compete in the postseason this year. So why not take a proactive approach and sign OBJ just in case?
Yes, the Rams are set with WRs Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua. But if Robinson is suspended, the Rams only tried and tested other wide receiver option is Tutu Atwell. I think Atwell can put up yards in the Rams offense, but in a different type of role. Demarcus Robinson is the go-to receiver when the team needs a touchdown.
OBJ can give that, and much more.
The Rams do not need to commit to a multi-year contract. Simply re-sign OBJ through the end of 2024. If both sides like the arrangement, they can explore a longer deal at the end of the season. The Rams face uncertainty over WR Demarcus Robinson right now. WR Odell Beckham Jr. is an ideal Plan B. And it looks like he is soon to be available.
Take a chance. Columbus did.
