The Los Angeles Rams know that the road to Super Bowl LXI is going to be steep and treacherous. The Seattle Seahawks won Super Bowl LX with a rare blend of offensive and defensive dominance. To win an NFL Championship, the Rams need to ensure they can win both games against the Seahawks in 2026.

But the San Francisco 49ers understand that as well.

Unlike Los Angeles, San Fran knows that with all the chips on the line, it wasn't nearly competitive enough to face Seattle in a win-or-go-home setting. But that has only served to motivate that team to make wholesale changes in 2026 as well. And LA should take notice.

The Niners struggled as the worst team to sack opposing quarterbacks, getting just 20 sacks for the entire season. That lack of pass rush crippled its secondary, affording just six interceptions. And the dominoes kept falling, as a (-6) net turnover rate was 26th-worst in the NFL.

In their NFL playoffs clash, it was clear that the Seahawks dominated the 49ers in all phases of the game. But the biggest surprise is how the Seahawks' secondary corralled the Niners receivers. San Fran only mustered three of six completions for 24 yards. Ho hum.

Rams secondary will be tested early by the new and improved 49ers

While the LA Rams were busy rebuilding their secondary to meet the challenges of 2026, the 49ers were rebuilding their receiver room. The 49ers added veteran wide receiver Mike Evans, as well as adding former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Christian Kirk. They join Ricky Pearsall and former Rams Demarcus Robinson.

But general manager John Lynch did not stop there. He pivoted to the defensive side of the team and traded for a promising defensive tackle in Osa Odighizuwa. Not content with that move, he signed former outside linebacker Dre Greenlaw.

Los Angeles has improved significantly after the first wave of free agency. But they are not the only team to do so. Of course, no roster assessment can be relied upon in March. The proof happens on a football field. But LA should take note of what SF is doing as well.

They will clash twice in 2026 and open the season Down Under.

As always, thanks for reading.
