(2) - Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo

It was pretty obvious that veteran backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has plenty in his tank. His Week 18 performance of leading the team's backup players to an Impressive Week 18 offensive display despite losing certainly did a great deal to polish his tarnished NFL reputation. With the team facing uncertainty over QB Matthew Stafford and WR Cooper Kupp, the logical step for the team would be to re-sign Garoppolo and have him prepared to lead the offense in the next chapter.

Jimmy Garoppolo is a natural in this offense. In just one game, pitting Rams backups against Seattle Seahawks starters, Garoppolo completed 27 of 41 passes for 334 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Ironically, that Week 18 performance was the best play of a quarterback all season long in terms of passing yards.

Both veteran QBs Baker Mayfield and Carson Wentz used impressive work in the Rams offense to attract interest from other NFL teams. With the lack of star power at the quarterback position in the 2025 NFL Draft, some teams are bound to be interested in Garoppolo as a veteran bridge for 2025 while that team develops a young quarterback, or Garoppolo showcases command of that offense.

Despite the uncertainty at quarterback, the Rams front office's hands are tied until they have a defined response from Matthew Stafford over whether he is interested in returning to play in 2025.

Until that happens, the Rams can only offer a backup quarterback role, and the salary for an NFL backup quarterback, to Garoppolo to extend him.

But will the Rams make that offer?

The Rams drafted heavily on the defensive side of the football, and the results were astonishing. The team spent the least on the defensive side of the football, yet the group showed up in the spotlight. Will the team use those lessons to pivot on the offensive in the 2025 NFL Draft? The team has already begun that work, adding an undrafted rookie center, a rookie running back, and two solid wide receivers in the past two draft classes.

The team has a marvelous knack of restoring luster to tarnished quarterbacks. I would love to see Jimmy Garoppolo back on the Rams roster. I just don't think the team has the starting role (and salary) to offer him. Like Mayfield and Wentz, I suspect other teams can make that offer, and lure another veteran away.
