Aaron Donald's return is exactly what Rams defense needs in Week 2

Just as hype for the Los Angeles Rams' season has dimmed beyond recognition, a flicker springs anew. Disheartened fans can find a new reason to hope for the best from the Horns. Per NFL insider Adam Schefter, defensive tackle Aaron Donald may suit up for Week 2.

And this reeling defense needs him back, ASAP.

While Donald's debut has been eagerly awaited since he re-signed with the team, he sat out Week 1 as he was not quite ready to compete for a full 60 minutes of NFL action. But with elite edge rusher Myles Garrett on injured reserve for at least the next four weeks, Donald can restore a pass-rush presence that this defense desperately needs.

Donald retired after the 2023 NFL season. But he was still performing at a very high level that season. He walked away after recording 53 tackles and eight sacks. And he accomplished that while facing a weekly diet of double- and triple-teams in the trenches.

He welcomed rookie stars Kobie Turner and Byron Young to the team. Now, they are in the final year of their rookie contracts.

Getting Aaron Donald back would boost ailing Rams defense

For some fans, turning that frown upside down will not be easy. After a loss in the season opener, LA's next four opponents all appear tough. While the Denver Broncos have yet to play on Monday Night Football, all early opponents won in Week 1. And yes, that includes the impressive New York Giants.

Meanwhile, the formidable Rams roster is already experiencing injuries. Garrett's knee injury wasn't the only serious impact on this team. Inside linebacker Omar Speights suffered a hip injury. Nate Landman injured his shoulder. Tight end Davis Allen suffered a concussion. And safety Kam Curl suffered an ankle injury.

That's a pretty lengthy injury list for the first game of the season.

Donald's return can help offset an early injury trend that has shaken fans' confidence. Losing was bad enough. But losing multiple players to injuries poured salt into the wound.

Getting Donald back in Week 2 gives fans and players somebody to rally around.

Nobody is setting the bar too high. If Garrett could be completely neutralized in his Blue and Yellow debut, the same could happen to Donald. But the unretired veteran holds an incredibly high standard for himself and for everyone around him.

That level of leadership gives players new focus.

No opponent will simply surrender. If the Rams hope to win, they will need to earn those victories. The road may be steeper, but they have been here before. In 2023, Donald helped LA turn the corner after a 3-6 start. His leadership could be a vital factor in turning this season around as well, beginning in Week 2.
