Did the Los Angeles Rams make a mistake? Perhaps a simple error of judgement? The team ignored the depth of quarterback talent available in the 2024 NFL Draft, at a time when the talent was prominent and deep. Now the team appears to be shopping for a quarterback at a time when there are numerous concerns and questions about this draft class overall.
We had done a limited quarterback comparison in the past. Now, just hours before the 2025 NFL Draft gets underway, NFL Insider Albert Breer runs down the top nine quarterback prospects up for grabs. Sadly, he opens his article by comparing the 2025 NFL Draft rookie quarterback prospects to the 2022 NFL Draft rookie quarterback prospects.
In that draft, only one quarterback was selected in Round 1. Only four quarterbacks were selected in the first two days of the draft. Only nine quarterbacks were selected throughout the entire draft. And of the entire draft class, only Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy developed into a consistent NFL starter.
Breer does not pull any punches in his assessment of quarterbacks.
- Cam Ward, Miami (Fla.) | NFL comp - Ben Roethlisberger-lite
- Shedeur Sanders, Colorado | NFL comp - Teddy Bridgewater
- Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss | NFL comp - Baker Mayfield w/ weaker arm
- Tyler Shough, Louisville | NFL comp - Drew Lock
- Jalen Milroe, Alabama | NFL comp - Taysom Hill
- Quinn Ewers, Texas | NFL comp - Spencer Rattler
- Will Howard, Ohio State | NFL comp - Josh McCown
- Kyle McCord, Syracuse | NFL comp - Case Keenum
- Riley Leonard, Notre Dame | NFL comp - Tim Tebow-lite
- Other prospects: Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel | North Dakota State QB Cam Miller | Florida QB Graham Mertz | Indiana QB Curtis Rourke | UCLA QB Ethan Garbers
You can tell by the NFL comparisons that the overall draft class is not exactly ripe with accolades and high ceilings. But as one draft analysts stated: NFL teams that need a change at the quarterback position will try to select the most talented and best fitting rookie and will work with that player to develop and optimize him for the 2025 NFL season.
Sometimes you step into the batter's box hoping to hit a home run, but settle for an intentional walk.
While some fans are not optimistic about any rookie quarterbacks that the Rams may select, the team is uniquely positioned with a superb veteran starter and backup quarterback. That simplifies the learning curve for any rookie quarterback, allowing them to develop at their own organic pace. That could mean the difference between success and bust for a rookie QB on the Rams roster.
I see the Rams selecting a quarterback no sooner than Round 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft. Of course, that is presuming that the team is not hopelessly enamored with a quarterback in this year's draft
Will the Rams jump on a quarterback early in this year's draft? If they do, will it be on Day 2, or Day 3? OIr, perish the thought, Will the Rams seek a successor for Matthew Stafford on Day 1 of the draft? Based on what Albert Breer has shared, I am hoping that Day 3 is the moment to invest in a quarterback.
As always, thanks for reading
