Blake Corum gave Rams fans best Stetson Bennett endorsement yet

In what many Los Angeles Rams fans expected to be a murky QB2 competition, Stetson Bennett has instead emerged as the clear frontrunner. In fact, it no longer seems to be much of a competition at all. During training camp, Bennett has taken precedence over rookie Ty Simpson in leading the second-team and stepping in with the first-stringers on Matthew Stafford's days off. 

That is due in large part to his demonstrated command of the offense. While the occasional reckless turnover remains an issue, Bennett has for the most part led the unit confidently down the field. His calm and control have not escaped third-year running back Blake Corum:

"When you look at Stetson, he carries a certain type of aura, swag,when he enters the field, he's not scared to cut it loose. He goes out there with utmost confidence and his form is beautiful.

"Coach has seen it, us players have seen it, him taking just a leap in being a field general, taking total command of the offense. And you can hear it in the huddle when he's calling the plays. He's saying it with authority. You guys have seen it. He's balled out this camp and he's only going to continue to get better." 

That's reassuring news for Rams fans who wondered whether this team would have any backup to speak of once the summer dust settled. As things stand now, Bennett is on track to capably assume that mantle.

Bennett appears ready to contribute as Rams backup QB

Of course, still seeking his first official snap, the fourth-year passer remains unproven. Even as Bennett grew and developed across his first three seasons, head coach Sean McVay never felt confident enough to tag him as the primary backup. Instead, the team rolled with an assortment of veterans in Bennett's rookie year and relied on Jimmy Garoppolo over the past two seasons. 

That seemed to be the plan again in 2026, before Garoppolo, a free agent, announced that he was mulling over retirement. Although he has since indicated interest in returning in the right scenario, Bennett is, for the first time in his career, looking like a potentially viable QB2.

In Corum's eyes, that potential has been there:

"I mean to be honest, when he's gotten his opportunity, he's always showed up. Since I've been here every preseason game, I feel like he's balled out. And that's all you can ask. When someone gets an opportunity, you go out there and show what you can do. And Setson has always done that."

In two preseason games last year, Bennett threw for 512 yards and five touchdowns while completing nearly 69 percent of his passes. He led the league in passing yards per game. 

At Georgia, the two-time national champion finished his college career in prolific fashion, accumulating 56 TDs to 14 INTs in his final two seasons and leading the SEC in passing yards as a senior. 

The Rams saw enough to draft Bennett in the fourth round in 2023 and while it's taken a while, he is finally stepping up to the plate. McVay has already given Bennett his flowers, but to hear Corum give him props as well, as a player who has grown up alongside Bennett in Los Angeles, means just as much, if not more. 

"He's just one of those guys that continues to get better," concluded Corum, a 2024 third-rounder. "He focuses on the day at hand, the goal at hand, the task at hand. He makes the most of his opportunity."

2026 has brought Bennett his biggest opportunity yet, and he's making the most of it.
