When the Los Angeles Rams passed on highly regarded Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, I was a bit perplexed. Sander seemed to fall into the category of a low-risk, high-reward prospect. And when the Cleveland Browns finally selected him in Round 5, the cries of 'Steal of the NFL Draft' reverberated across the nation.
It wasn't that I had my heart set on the Rams selecting Sanders or any particular rookie quarterback. It was that had hoped that the team might select some rookie quarterback to begin coaching up to become NFL-worthy in the future. I was unconvinced that the Rams have a long shelf life remaining with veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford.
And after a training camp that has seen no football-related activity out of Stafford yet, the hopes of getting another two or three years out of him are fading fast. Were the story to end there, this would feel like a 'What if...?' tale.
The Browns' quarterback room is a nightmare
It doesn't end there. The Browns' quarterback room is in utter chaos. Three quarterbacks are dealing with injuries, including both rookie quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Sanders. So the Browns are re-signing last year's veteran quarterback, Tyler Huntley:

With Kenny Pickett & Dillon Gabriel dealing with hamstring injuries & Shedeur Sanders having shoulder soreness, the Browns (incredibly) needed another quarterback.#NFL #DawgPound pic.twitter.com/yyR1mZNLSi
Where does that leave the Browns quarterback room? For now, it's a six-pack of quarterbacks, and some debate whether any players in the room are capable of starting and leading the team to victory this season:

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Now, compare that to the Rams quarterback situation. Even as the team suspends Stafford from all football-related activities, the team continues to purr along on the throwing of veteran quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett. Even the presence of reserve quarterback Dresser Winn adds more QB capacity to the team's training camp.
I'm not razzing the Cleveland Browns over players suffering injuries. That happens. What is alarming about the team is the lack of planning, as injuries occur. Six quarterbacks, three nursing injuries, and questions surrounding all of them.
The Rams are not immune to unfortunate circumstances. But drafting two quarterbacks in one year, only to have both lose vital reps due to injuries, is a bit disappointing. The Browns had every opportunity to sign UFL MVP Bryce Perkins. By not doing so, he remains on a short list of QBs should the Rams need to sign one quickly.
As always, thanks for reading.
