Chris Shula and this Rams defense finally have their chance to shine

The transformation of the Los Angeles Rams defense has been one of the NFL's leading offseason narratives. And now here we are, on the cusp of seeing firsthand what all the fuss was about. On paper LA has plenty of pop, perhaps as much as any defense in the league.

General manager Les Snead went on a shopping spree of epic proportions, even for him. The Rams signed free agent cornerback Jaylen Watson. They traded for Trent McDuffie and Myles Garrett. They even lured the legendary Aaron Donald out of retirement.

While Donald will not make his debut in Melbourne, Australia, the Horns have plenty of players to watch. It's anybody's guess how well so many new faces will fit into a defense that was already showing up among the NFL's top ten a year ago.

LA knows the San Francisco 49ers. And San Fran knows LA. That's what complicates the matchup.

And there are ample other talking points. Which team deployed a better practice strategy throughout the week? Who will emerge healthier? Even travel plans to and from the game have become hot-button topics.

Week 1 is Chris Shula's chance to get Rams defense started off hot

Let's be clear: defensive coordinator Chris Shula has earned the benefit of the doubt regardless of how Week 1 turns out. But after Shula led one of the NFL's least expensive defenses to spectacular heights for two years, the Rams have finally invested in his group. And with that investment comes the pressure to perform.

Over time, Shula's defense should perform very well. But in a game with so many unusual variables, how will the gang hold together? After sitting out the preseason, starters will suit up and play from kickoff to the final whistle. Can they manage that marathon and remain fresh and rested?

The 49ers are always dangerous. It's not a stretch of the imagination to believe they will play their best game of the season in Week 1. They always seem to step up their game when facing Los Angeles.

So the defense must be ready.

Still, the 49ers haven't seen this crew. Myles Garrett elevates everyone around him, much like Donald did before retiring after the 2023 season. And the two new cornerbacks, Watson and McDuffie, are solid to elite in both coverage and run support.

Expectations are sky-high. If Shula takes his crew to the top, he will earn a spot on the NFL short list of potential head coaches. If his defense struggles in Week 1 and he doesn't bounce back in later weeks, he will sink to the bottom of that list.

Rams fans don't want to Shula leave, but that's a conversation for another day. These are the 49ers we're talking about, which means every LA-er wants a dominating victory.
