When it comes to how the Los Angeles Rams view the potential fit of rookie prospects in the NFL Draft, it does not always align with how the majority of NFL draft analysts view the field of NFL hopefuls. But time after time, the Rams seem to have a better understanding of what it takes for rookies to flourish on their roster. As such, fans have learned to listen to what the Rams have to say before taking too much stock in the knee-jerk grades assigned by NFL draft analysts.

It's not unusual if some fans are not exactly wowed by the Rams' draft selections after two days of drafting. The team entered the draft with picks at 26, 90, and 101. The team emerged with rookies selected at 46 and 90. That is one fewer rookie, and significantly less weighted draft value than expected.

Perhaps that is why my initial reaction to Oregon TE Terrance Ferguson was a bit underwhelming. As I have explained before, I've learned that the best way to appreciate the wizardry of Rams GM Les Snead is to wait and see how my mood changes. I am warming up rapidly to Ferguson. And the Rams selection of Michigan OLB Josaiah Stewart is ideal for a team that has proven to have a very dangerous pass rush.

Now, it is even more dangerous.

Rams HC Sean McVay shared his thoughts after the second day of the draft. He packs a great deal of information in that extract, but here it is in the video clip.

The Rams have a plan in place for both early rookie selections. While they are not easily projected as instant starters, they are projected as instant contributors. We have shared several articles about tight end Terrance Ferguson. So let's pivot to the defensive side of the football.

Josaiah Stewart's passion already shining through

The Rams parted ways with OLB Michael Hoecht. And with starters at outside linebacker in Byron Young and Jared Verse, the team needed to reinforce the ranks with a rookie who could be counted on to give quality snaps. At 6-foot-1 and 249 pounds, Stewart is not going to be an iron man who can handle every snap in all 17 games.

But he is a passionate player who give his all for as long as he can. And based on what I saw from his work with the Michigan Wolverines, he continues to make outstanding plays for far longer than you can imagine

Josaiah Stewart's reaction to being selected by the Rams was a pure outburst of emotion. He is a passionate player, and the opportunity to play for Rams DC Chris Shula must feel like hitting the lottery. And there is work for Stewart to do. The Rams pass rush made tremendous strides in 2024. They expect to make an even bigger impact in 2025. That means Stewart's job is already cut out for him. He will need to catch up quickly to balance out the defensive front.

The Rams did not address roster needs. But the team added two rookies who can contribute to even more success in 2025. Les Snead and Sean McVay are impressed with their first two rookies. Because they are, I am too.

As always, thanks for reading.
