Los Angeles Rams running back coach Ron Gould is no superhero, and he will tell you that himself. Heroics do not require superheroes. Since joining the organization in 2023, Gould has quietly inspired his players to be their best selves on the field and off it.
Even as Gould gladly cedes the spotlight, he is oozing with humble confidence, a quality that has translated to Rams running backs. His character, not just his teaching, has helped turn L.A.'s rushing attack completely around. Despite veering away from bigger-bodied backs, his success with Kyren Williams and, last season, Blake Corum as well, speaks for itself.
In 2022, the Rams rushed for 1,661 yards and 15 touchdowns. In 2025, those figures rose to 2,152 yards and 17 TDs. The improvement underlying that material evidence is how well the members of the running back room complement one another.
Each one, even little-used depth pieces like Ronnie Rivers and Jarquez Hunter - who as a rookie filled the role of a spare tire on a car that never experienced a flat - is a model team player with his own unique skillset. The well-oiled machinery that is the Rams run game is all thanks to Coach Gould.
Gould has been crucial to revamping Rams rushing attack
When it comes to raw athleticism, the Rams running back room does not impress. No, they are not turtles. But Hunter, the roadrunner of the bunch, never touched the football last season. His 4.44-second 40-time is 0.09 ahead of Corum in second place. Perhaps even to a fault, L.A. is not smitten by speed.
Instead, Gould seeks out passionate and coachable players. He doesn't overemphasize any measurable from the NFL Combine. He prioritizes work ethic and dedication just as much as athletic prowess, allowing a player's passion for the game to inform his role.
That is how Williams, a former fifth-round pick, has found success in Horns, and how Corum has blossomed into his ideal complement.
It's hard to argue with Gould's results. Measured by yards per game, he took over the NFL's 27th-ranked rushing offense in 2022 and had the Rams seventh by last season. Better still, there is room for further improvement in 2026. That is music to Sean McVay's ears as he seeks to preserve quarterback Matthew Stafford in his age-38 season.
As for Coach Gould, he is more than a fit on the Rams coaching staff. He is one of the team's unsung heroes.
As always, thanks for reading.
