Colin Cowherd floats a Hall of Fame replacement for Matthew Stafford

Rent-A-Quarterback anyone?

While Los Angeles Rams are still anxiously awaiting to find out if Matthew Stafford will be the quarterback in 2025 or not, Colin Cowherd is throwing potential replacement options at the wall and seeing what sticks.

On Thursday's edition of The Herd, Cowherd proposed an idea to NFL insider Albert Breer that Rams fans will likely not be big fans of. Cowherd said that the Rams could trade Stafford, accumulate picks and build the roster, and sign Aaron Rodgers to play for at least one year.

"I don't think it's crazy," Cowherd said. "I think he goes to LA for a year. By the way, Aaron is dying for stability, a head coach he respects, and I think he looks at [Sean] McVay and thinks -- You know, his brother, [Matt] LaFleur's brother's the OC. It makes sense to me!"

For as crazy as Cowherd's argument might sound to some, Breer seemed onboard with the idea, noting, "The idea in that system for that coach would appeal to any quarterback."

This is an interesting scenario to think about because, on the one hand, Rodgers is coming off a few less-than-stellar seasons after being considered one of the best quarterbacks in the league. He's 41 years old (set to turn 42 during the 2025 season) and had Achilles surgery last year. People will hear those things and likely be turned off by the idea of bringing Rodgers in but Cowherd and Breer made some good points.

One is that, as bad as the Jets were in 2024, it wasn't entirely on Rodgers. Cowherd pointed out how the Jets' coaching staff was abysmal last year and Breer mentioned how now that Rodgers has a full year under his belt post-Achilles surgery that it's likely he's better in 2025 than he was a year ago.

The question here would be if the Rams want to trade Stafford and add some picks and feel confident enough that Rodgers could keep them competitive in 2025. They have solid weapons on offense (Puka Nacua and, for now, Cooper Kupp), an improving run game, and the defense played pretty well for losing Aaron Donald the previous offseason.

Rodgers might not be what he used to be but this is something interesting to think about for sure.
