The Los Angeles Rams are vying for the right to compete for another Lombardi trophy this season. But it's as much of a race against time as it is against 31 other NFL teams that have the same lofty aspirations. Every team wants to win the Super Bowl. Only one team can. That creates a bit of a challenge for veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford.

While the 37-year-old hurler is in peak form right now, the front office has already acknowledged that time is working against him. Contracts are on a year-to-year basis, despite have Stafford inked to a deal through 2026. So the only question is: Who is the next franchise quarterback for Los Angeles?

One young veteran who has already thrown his hat into the ring to be considered is Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson. Per ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, Richardson would be happy to reset his career for 2026 by landing on the Rams roster. The question is, would general manager Les Snead pull the trigger before the trade deadline?

Snead may like Anthony Richardson for the right price

Complicating the matter is the fact that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is on injured reserve, and will not be back until Week 12. If any NFL team wants to acquire him now, it has to negotiate a fair value for an imperfect scenario.

Richardson is a struggling young quarterback who was the fourth overall player selected in the 2023 NFL Draft. The problem was that he was a rookie prospect viewed as having a tremendously high ceiling, but needing the patience and support to get him there. It's safe to state that he is not there yet.

Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 244 pounds, he is a staturesque player with a cannon for a throwing arm. He simply needed a patient offense that would allow him to develop organically. He didn't get the chance to grow into a starting quarterback so far.

Los Angeles has a terrific reputation for restoring the luster to NFL quarterbacks. But the team has done so with free agent veterans. It has yet to trade for one, and yet to achieve miraculous results with a young quarterback. Could Richardson be the right fit on this team?

Perhaps. But the same uncertainty surrounds any rookie prospect who is available in the 2026 NFL Draft, with the additional variable of not knowing what to expect. With Richardson, there is plenty of video footage with him under center. The coaching staff knows what he brings to the table.

The Rams have Stafford (37 years old), Jimmy Garoppolo (33 years old) and Stetson Bennett (27 years old). Richardson is 23 years old. So the team gets a huge reset in terms of age at the position if a deal is struck. The final question remains, at what cost?

The Colts have all but moved on from Richardson, so they cannot expect to recoup sunk costs. And the fact is that he is injured, has struggled, and may not even pan out. But LA's coaching staff is set to develop quarterbacks, so let them work with a young QB and hope for the best.

Nobody expected Colts quarterback Daniel Jones to play well this season. The same could happen for their former franchise quarterback on a new team as well. As always, thanks for reading.
