Davante Adams delivers the formula to unlock Rams mastery in vital category

For the third time since hiring Sean McVay as the head coach, offensive innovation led by Davante Adams could mean another Super Bowl appearance.

The Los Angeles Rams have been viewed as an outstanding offense. And yet, since the team redefined 11-personnel as the default offensive formation in 2017 and 2018, the strategy has seemed either predictable, stale, or a bit of both.

Since head coach Sean McVay redefined NFL offenses in 2017, other teams have been eager to clip and graft offensive coaches from Los Angeles to their own coaching staff.

The effects of that dilution have limited LA's effectiveness, while giving NFL defenses more exposure to the McVay way of running an offense. And the results are decidedly noticeable in the following data table:

2017 - 29.9 points per game
2018 - 32.9 points per game
2019 - 24.6 points per game
2020 - 23.3 points per game
2021 - 27.1 points per game
2022 - 18.1 points per game
2023 - 23.8 points per game
2024 - 21.6 points per game
2025 - 27.8 points per game *

* 11 games

The offense has had three significant upticks. In 2018, the offense was acclimated to McVay's offensive strategy. In 2021, the offense added veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. In 2025, the team added wide receiver Davante Adams. So, what does Adams add to this offense?

Matthew Stafford loves throwing TDs to Davante Adams

Adams is a touchdown machine on an offense that has no trouble gaining yards, but has stalled in the red zone for years. Suddenly, the offense is scoring multiple touchdowns per game.

That has buoyed the effectiveness of starting quarterback Matthew Stafford, who has thrown 30 touchdowns in 11 games to just two interceptions. Stafford is finally firmly entrenched in MVP conversations. He has thrown for more touchdown passes just three times in his NFL career.

Even as Adams has surged to 12 touchdown receptions in 11 games for the team, other receivers are not suffering either. Three tight ends have scored multiple receiving touchdowns already, as well as both wide receiver Puka Nacua and running back Kyren Williams.

This offense has several innovations this season. It's not just Davante Adams in the red zone, but a sudden burst of offensive efficiency with 13-personnel formations.

Evenj the secondary has benefitted from the tutoring and mentoring of Adams, taking defensive backs under his wing to up their game as well.

Is it any wonder that veteran wide receiver Davante Adams is having the time of his life playing for LA? Everything he touches seems to turn to gold.

As always, thanks for reading.
