Imagine the horror that Los Angeles Rams tight end Davis Allen is facing in OTAs right now. Instead of hitting cruise control in his NFL career, Allen returns in 2026 to face even more competition. After fighting through tremendous competition to earn a roster spot and put up his best numbers as a pro, he is on the cusp of getting kicked to the curb.
Make no mistake about it. When the 53-man roster takes form, Allen knows that he might not be on it.
Despite an offense powered by tight ends, the Rams can carry a limited number of players at the position. That number is almost certainly four, and with veterans Tyler Higbee, Colby Parkinson, and now Terrance Ferguson joining talented rookie Max Klare, fans may already be penciling in Allen as the odd man out.
Don't discount Davis Allen from making the team just yet
Allen is entering the fourth and final season of his rookie contract. While he hasn't been a mainstay, he has never failed to deliver in limited opportunities. Over three seasons, he has hauled in 40 of 57 targets for 342 yards and four touchdowns. Head coach Sean McVay no doubt appreciates being able to deploy Allen in a variety of scenarios and personnel sets, primarily as a blocking tight end but occasionally as a receiver, too.
With an aging Higbee, Allen is not a bad player to keep on the roster. He can fill a vital role, make plays when needed, be extended on a team-friendly contract, and sustain offensive continuity. In 2025, he hauled in over 70 percent of the passes thrown his way. Whatever Allen isn't, he is solidly dependable.
There is one way in which he could make the team by default, in the case that the Rams trade Parkinson for a sell-high return ahead of his last year under contract.
Otherwise, by the numbers, Klare is likely the guy competing for Allen's roster spot. In reality, Ferguson is almost certainly on the bubble as well. Ferguson arrived in the 2025 draft to catch passes, but after he pulled down just 44 percent of his targets (and only 11 catches), the front office drafted more competition.
Meanwhile, Allen keeps chugging along. He can block. He can catch. As a pass-catcher and an overall contributor, the former fifth-round pick just had what is easily his best season. In 2026, he'll see if he can find a way to stick around for at least one more year.
As always, thanks for reading.
