Did Rams miss an opportunity to add perfect successor for Matthew Stafford?

Rare opportunities. But were they good opportunities?

Talking about life after LA Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is certainly a difficult topic for some fans. You see, the guy is still zinging darts, coming into the game with little hope, and stealing the souls of opponents and rival fan bases. His game-winning touchdown throw to Demarcus Robinson in overtime in Week 9 to win the game was just one of his perfectly placed passes.

So yes, it's hard for some to embrace the reality that these games, these glorious come-from-behind victories, may someday be no more.

Unfortunately, the Rams front office doesn't enjoy the luxury of sitting back and taking it all in. You see, with the team fully invested in a 36-year-old starting quarterback, there has to be a contingency plan. The team was very wise to draft former Arkansas interior offensive lineman Beaux Limmer, although he was almost certainly projected to warm the bench throughout 2024. Unexpectedly, the team lost both starting offensive linemen Jonah Jackson and Steve Avila to injuries, forcing the team to start rookie Limmer at center.

Limmer has yet to allow a quarterback sack.

So, you just never know. And it's foolish to think that anyone does. NFL GMs who succeed certainly don't know. But they prepare for multiple scenarios, hoping that injuries don't happen, but having a plan in place should injuries occur.

So why not turn that same wisdom to the quarterback position? The team has both veteran QB Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett to take over in 2024 if something should happen to Stafford. But as soon as fans peer around the corner and examine 2025, they are surprised to see that the team only has Stafford, now 37 years old, and Stetson Bennett on the roster.

If this team has learned anything since winning Super Bowl LVI, it's the reality that injuries happen. As such, the team should at least have a plan in place to foster meaningful competition for playing time in 2025 and beyond. And that includes the quarterback position.
