Don't expect Cooper Kupp to give NFL teams the Aaron Rodgers treatment

NFL teams are forced to be patient over Aaron Rodgers decision. But with Cooper Kupp's decision, they won't need to be.

The Los Angeles Rams could not pry a Day 3 pick from any NFL team for the exclusive rights to add veteran WR Cooper Kupp to their roster. And the fact that Kupp's contract held compensation at $20 million for 2025 was probably a huge impediment to any trade as well. So the Rams held to their commitment to move on from Kupp, and released him on March 12, 2024.

Now, it's up to the general manager of 31 NFL teams to make their best offer to the veteran wide receiver as quickly as possible. Kupp's timetable is not exactly one that will allow teams to mull over the offer and get back to him in a couple of weeks. Cooper Kupp is all business, and he has a timetable to make his decision already in mind.

So if any team wants him to play for them, best to hand in their offers ASAP. Per NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, he already has five teams extending offers, and that could double pretty quickly. Unlike veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Kupp has no intention of making this a long drawn-out process.

While Cooper Kupp has been injury prone in recent years, he has remained productive. In eight NFL seasons, he has averaged 972 receiving yards, over seven receiving touchdowns, and a 71.2 catch rate. Despite playing just 12 games in both 2023 and 2024, he averaged 724 receiving yards and 5.5 touchdowns, while catching 64.6 percent of passes thrown his way.

Even at his worst, he is a formidable offensive weapon. Better still, his longest receptions in each of the past two years are 62 and 69 yards respectively. He still has the ability to take over a game to secure a win.

So why the comparison to veteran QB Aaron Rogers? Rodgers has had plenty of time and plenty of offers to play for a new team. But he continues to make them wait for his decision. It's gotten so bad that NFL Insider Adam Schefter seems a bit miffed at Rodgers' waiting game:

Which team will land Kupp? That remains to be seen. It's my hope that he lands on a competitive AFC team because, quite frankly, I don't want the LA Rams to face him. Not only is he still a solid NFL player, but I just cannot bring myself to root against the guy. So, the fewer occasions that the Rams face him, the better.

We should know Kupp's decision soon. I cannot see this dragging out, especially with Cooper Kupp's future hanging in the balance. He is eager to get back up on the saddle of a new NFL team and get to work. I, for one, expect him to do very well this season.

As always, thanks for reading.
