The Los Angeles Rams swung for the fences and acquired All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie in a trade on Wednesday. To get McDuffie, the Rams had to send four draft picks to the Kansas City Chiefs, including this year's 29th overall pick and a third-round pick in next year's draft.
The asking price was massive, but the Rams have never been strangers to making deals like these. They came up just short of reaching Super Bowl 60 earlier this year because their defense let them down. By acquiring McDuffie, they're hoping that won't happen again a year from now.
It was a big gamble to take, but again, general manager Les Snead isn't worried about losing draft picks. Plus, as of now, the Rams still have their other first-round pick, so they're still in decent shape there.
All of that being said, we know Rams fans are likely on board with this trade. But how are the talking heads feeling about it? Let's see what grades L.A. has received for its role in the McDuffie deal.
Grading Rams' massive trade for Trent McDuffie
CBS Sports: A
John Breech of CBS Sports was a huge fan of this move for the Rams, giving them a sparkling A for their efforts in the trade. He said it best with this little snippet right here, talking about Snead:
"The man who invented the 'F them picks' philosophy has traded away another first-round pick, and like most of his prior decisions, this one feels like a home run."
Breech goes on to say that cornerback was the Rams' biggest need this offseason, and, yeah, it's safe to say they addressed it here in a big way. They also managed to hang onto the more valuable first-rounder, and now they have a franchise cornerback joining their already-stacked squad.
Breech gave the Chiefs a B+, for what it's worth.
Yahoo Sports: B
Frank Schwab of Yahoo Sports wasn't as high on this move for Los Angeles, handing out a B. Schwab points out that McDuffie is a proven commodity in the league, while the 29th pick Kansas City netted in the deal isn't guaranteed to be a success.
That being said, Schwab had to mention that the cost to land McDuffie was pricey, and that's where the problem is for him. Not only did they trade all of those picks, but they'll also have to extend McDuffie, which also won't come cheap.
All of that being said, Schwab said this is a team in win-now mode, and these are the moves teams in win-now mode have to make. He's not wrong. He also gave the Chiefs a B, too.
USA Today: B
Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz of USA Today also gave the Rams a B for the McDuffie trade. He touched on how Sam Darnold torched the Rams' secondary in the NFC Championship Game and how McDuffie will hopefully help clean things up there.
Here was his issue with the deal, however:
"Still, this is a fairly considerable compensation package – including the likely extension that should be costly – for a player not in an elite tier at his position group. And there are at least a couple of areas of concern."
It's fair to say that McDuffie was not considered "elite" and that he had a down year in 2025. That being said, the Rams have always been a team not afraid to take risks, and they're banking on McDuffie bouncing back and being his All-Pro self with his new team in 2026.
Middlehurst-Schwartz thought the Chiefs did better in this trade, giving them an A-.
For the most part, the talking heads seemed to think that both teams did well here, and that's totally fair. The Rams got a great player who fills one of their biggest weaknesses, and the Chiefs got a bunch of draft picks and were able to clear up some cap space. Win-win for both sides.
