The Los Angeles Rams were very aware of just how important All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald was to the defense. It's logical to conclude that the way he played regular-season games with such intensity and passion might supply the evidence to form that conclusion. His passion was not limited to facing other NFL teams. There is little evidence that he could ever turn it off.
It comes as no surprise that a former teammate, undrafted quarterback Luis Perez, has harrowing tales about facing Donald in practice. He originally signed with the team as an undrafted collegiate free agent after the 2018 NFL Draft. He returned to the team in 2022, joining John Wolford and Bryce Perkins behind Matthew Stafford.
But it was in the 2018 season that Perez earned a spot on the team's practice squad. That meant that he would be tasked with running the scout team offense to prepare the team's defense for the upcoming game. Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 220 pounds, the East Texas A&M rookie was a promising quarterback who flashed elite production. Despite multiple attempts to earn a roster spot in the NFL, he has since found a home playing for the UFL Arlington Renegades.
Rams scout team QB Luis Perez snitches on former teammate Aaron Donald
Perez appeared on the Talkin' Ball podcast and was asked by host Pat Leonard about memorable moments in his football career. He instantly gravitated to an occasion from his 2018 rookie season, when he was trying to run the scout team offense against the defense.
He recollects one occasion in which the center was hiking the football. The details suggest that he was in a shotgun formation, because he described it as a low snap. He bent down to get the football, and by the time he looked up, Donald was on him. The defensive game-wrecker didn't intend to initiate contact, but the play was so split-second that Perez flew backward.
The true tattle-tale moment comes later. Perez describes Donald as such a force of chaos that head coach Sean McVay was forced to pull him from practice because the offense couldn't run a play successfully with Donald on the field.
Imagine competing against a player who is so much better than everyone else that he literally was instructed by the head coach to get off the field so other players could get reps in without the plays being constantly blown up. Welcome to life with a future Hall-of-Famer in Aaron Donald on your team.
Imagine being that good. As always, thanks for reading.
