The Los Angeles Rams and Matthew Stafford still haven't figured out a solution for what's going to happen in 2025. The team gave Stafford permission to speak with other teams and see if they can do what it takes to make him happy this year.
Stafford reportedly is seeking $50 million annually this year whether that's with the Rams or another team. While discussing the Stafford situation on her podcast Scoops City, NFL insider Dianna Russini said that might not be in the cards for him.
More Rams news:
"Matthew goes out, sees there’s no market for him at the price he wants and the Rams say, 'All right, we’ll bring you back for $40 million,'" Russini said to her co-host and former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel. "Don’t you think that’s a fair number?"
Daniel did not think it was a fair number and as far as calling it a "travesty".
"$40 million is a travesty," Daniel said. "At this point, to be completely honest with you from a player's perspective, I would retire. If you’re offering $40 million at some point you have to be like, 'Hold up. Trevor Lawrence is making $53 million. Tua is making that much money. Dak’s making 60 million? I’m 10 times better than these guys. I’m a dog. I’m a warrior. Like, no.'"
Chase Daniel says Matthew Stafford should threaten to retire if Rams low-ball him
There's no doubt that trading for Stafford was a franchise-changing move, as the Rams went on to win the Super Bowl not even a year later and have been a playoff team in all but one of his four seasons in Los Angeles.
That being said, paying him the sum of money that he's asking for might hurt the franchise in the long run because it's going to make it harder for them to keep talent around or bring in new talent to help the team compete. Yes, the NFL is a quarterback's league but Stafford is 37 years old and has dealt with injuries in recent years.
It'll be interesting to see what happens with these two teams but if what Daniel says is true and teams don't want to give Stafford what he thinks he deserves, will he end up simply walking away from the game? Only time will tell.
