The Los Angeles Rams should not be mistaken for a team that embraces the cold blasts of arctic air screaming from the north. But let's not confuse the team for the array of players, many of whom are quite at home in the frigid, snowy winters of northern states. It just so happens that the Thiccer Kicker, Harrison Mevis, earned his merit badge in shoveling snow just 90 minutes from Chicago, Illinois.
That's the type of backstory that is bound to be vital to Los Angeles in their NFL playoff game against the Chicago Bears. While cold winds and snow have an offsetting effect on offenses and defenses, the singular skillset of a placekicker is such that either he can kick in wintry weather, or he cannot.
Mevis certainly can.
That sets the stage for buzzer-beater heroics for Mevis, a crossover kicker from the UFL. So far, Mevis has been exemplary with his accuracy, and the impact has moved the needle in the right direction for fans since he arrived. Still, fans watched in horror as the lone miss all season came against the Seattle Seahawks, allowing them to win in overtime and dropping LA to the wildcard bracket.
Fans want Mevis to stand tall in the postseason competition. They may get their wish.
Rams Harrison Mevis could be the hero fans have pleaded for
As difficult as it seems when games are being played, the Horns consistently play closely contested games. If the difference between winning and losing is going to come down to a single score, it's wise to invest in a quality kicker. So far, Mevis has proven to be just that.
No other position in the NFL is so visible, and so polarizing, as the placekicker. It's a binary position. Kick a field goal and be the hero, or miss the field goal and become the scapegoat. For offenses, a field goal means that the offense failed to score or even move the chains. And yet, it's the kicker alone whose job is on the line.
LA had already parted ways with kicker Joshua Karty this season. That means that the history with Mevis under game-winning pressure is extremely limited. While that leaves Mevis in the unknown category, the news that he is at home in Chicago weather could be a difference-maker.
After all, he knows snow. That could set the stage for buzzer-beater heroics for the Los Angeles Rams kicker.
As always, thanks for reading.
