How would you describe the performance of UFL kicking star Harrison Mevis? Since the team held a meeting of the minds to address the struggling field goal unit, resulting in signing Mevis to compete for the job, he has appeared in three games.
He has yet to miss a single kick. In three consecutive games, he has kicked two of two field goals and 13 of 13 extra points.
Both field goals were over 40+ yards. One was good from 50+ yards. So, let's ask the question. How would you describe his performance so far? After pondering the question, only one word comes to mind.
Flawless.
Too much? He joined the team mid-season, had a week to compete for the job, and won the competition. He played two weeks from the practice squad, only being signed to the active 53-man roster recently.
Harrison Mevis was more important to this team than imagined
General manager Les Snead is nobody's fool. There were a number of recycled NFL kickers available to be signed. But the team needed someone who could step in and make instant improvements to one of the worst field goal units in the NFL.
Suddenly, the field goal unit is among the best performing units in the NFL.
Yes, three games are a small sample. And two of two field goals is too small to form lasting conclusions. But let's be brutally honest, too. The field goal unit had cost the team two games already. And it had nowhere to go but up. After three games, evidence suggests that the front office overshot the mark of getting better. This group is red hot.
Had this team benefitted from perfect field goal kicking, the 9-2 record could arguably be 11-0. That's not wishful thinking, but simply the admission that a better field goal kicker would have eliminated the main contributing factor to the two losses.
Los Angeles was the only postseason contender with one of the worst special teams. While confirming the fix may take some time, it's clear that this unit is no longer dragging the team down. The team did what it had to do, tapped the UFL for one of its stars to improve LA's chances. Will it work?
It already is. As always, thanks for reading.
