Just when everything seemed to be falling into place for the Los Angeles Rams, a brutal injury is threatening to upend their dominant season. Superstar wide receiver Puka Nacua went down with an injury early in the Rams' win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, favoring his left leg.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport has since reported that Nacua suffered a sprained ankle that could cause him to miss games moving forward.
The news comes as a brutal blow for Rams fans who had enjoyed watching their team torch opponents with a seemingly unstoppable passing attack. Now, L.A. has to fight through the coming weeks without one of its best players on the field.
Rams' Puka Nacua could miss time with ankle injury
The injury occurred on a deep pass down the right sideline in the second quarter. Nacua went up for a contested catch attempt and was slow to get up after the pass fell incomplete. He left the field with the help of two trainers, immediately being evaluated for a foot injury.
The receiver returned to the game during the third quarter, to the surprise and relief of Rams fans. But he wasn't the integral piece of the offense fans are used to seeing, finishing the game with just two catches for 28 yards. L.A. already had a significant lead by the time Nacua returned, so there was no reason to overextend the star wideout.
Rapoport confirmed that the ankle sprain "will likely cause him to miss time." He mentioned that, after the Rams take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7, they have a bye week. It seems probable that Nacua will miss the game against the Jaguars, potentially returning in Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints. Hopefully, he can at least return for a crucial Week 10 battle with the San Francisco 49ers, a game that could play a major role in deciding the NFC West.
Before this injury, the star wide receiver was making a strong case for winning Offensive Player of the Year. He was leading the league in many receiving categories, acting as the engine for one of the most potent offenses in football. Not only does this injury set the Rams back in their push for a Super Bowl appearance, it could end up robbing Nacua of an award he was proving that he deserved. Hopefully, he can be back on the field sooner rather than later.
