Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the best Los Angeles Rams tight end rookie prospect of all? As the 2025 NFL Draft neared, almost everyone would have sworn that the best tight end prospect for the Rams was either Michigan TE Colston Loveland or Penn State TE Tyler Warren. You may have even gotten the occasional contrarian to chime in with Bowling Green TE Harold Fannin Jr.
But after just one OTA session, the reason why the Rams seemed to be so enamored with Oregon TE Terrance Ferguson is on full display. And already, Rams GM Les Snead is looking like a genius.
Again.
Sure, it's t-shirts and shorts time. And OTAs take on the complexity of a pickup game at the local playground. But even at this early and simple stage, Rams fans have had an earnest interest in seeing just how well rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson can catch the football. If he struggles, then it will almost certainly be another season of Tyler Higbee plus all others at the tight end position.
But if Ferguson impresses early and often, he has a legitimate shot at becoming the second tight end in 12-personnel offensive sub-packages. Better still, the Rams will be more likely to run 12-personnel plays more frequently, if only to get Ferguson on the football field.
Based on some of the videos from the first day of Rams OTAs, Ferguson is already looking like the real deal.
While Terrance Ferguson rounded out his turn upfield, he demonstrated a quick break to the outside, a long reach to get his hands up to catch the football, and the sense to secure the football quickly as he turned upfield.
There is a lot of positive buzz on the Rams roster over Ferguson already. And in his first post-practice press conference with the team, Ferguson was sent to the podium to respond to questions. After drafting Ferguson, Rams GM Les Snead said: "He will give more effort than the next guy." From what little we have seen and heard from Ferguson so far, Snead was spot on.
Les Snead loved him. Sean McVay loved him. While that is enough for any rookie to warrant optimism, the first impression is always very important. So far, Ferguson's first impressions have been spectacular.
It's a long road to get to the 2025 NFL season, but optimism over rookie TE Terrance Ferguson appears well-founded. I do not expect Rams fans to see Ferguson in preseason games this season. By that, I mean that Ferguson already appears to be in line for big things in the offense this season.
As always, thanks for reading.
